History of the Church

20210625 182304

Our main aim as a local church is for men and women to come to genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through repenting of their sins and being baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ as a demonstration of being a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

"let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

 Matthew 5:16

A church had existed in West Hendon for over a hundred years, but the current church building was constructed in the 1930s. For the following fifty years, the church sustained its own ministry and mission in the area. In the 1980s, the church declined numerically and, by the 1990s' was without pastoral leadership. In 1998 Willesden Green Baptist Church, under the leadership of Phil Robinson gave oversight to WHBC, and it became a part of the centrally organised Immanuel Baptist Fellowship (IBF). The buildings were renovated, and the work was renewed through several Willesden Green members seconded to help. Most of these people stayed and became a key part of the current fellowship.

In August 2009, WHBC became financially self-governing and responsible for its own mission, ministry, and maintenance. Rev David Ronco was appointed as the part-time Transitional Minister for two years during this period. In October 2011, Winston Bygrave was appointed as a part-time Pastor at WHBC. Since then, the congregation has grown through transference and conversion, and 16 baptisms have occurred.

P&LBygrave

Winston was converted to Christ in 1975. He quickly became actively involved in the Children and Youth
Ministry within his local church in South West
London. He pastored 3 different churches in South West London between 1983 and 1996 before being
called to the leadership team at New Life Bible Church, Wealdstone, under Pastor Rick Johnston, where he developed a deep understanding of the principles for
building effective churches.

In January 2007, he became part of the eldership team at New Life Christian Centre International, Wembley, under Pastor Ian Christenson. There he had oversight of the administration of the church, the Children and Youth Ministries, and the curriculum development and administration of the New Life Bible School, part of the ministry of NLCCi. He regularly taught at the Sunday services and in the Bible School. At NLCCi he developed a great insight into the importance of prayer and fasting.

Winston has led several home and foreign mission teams and has preached nationally and internationally. His burden is to see the development of effective apostolic teams that build strong autonomous churches, which in turn equip believers for their God-given ministry in building up the body of Christ and extending the Kingdom of God throughout the earth.

Winston is a well-respected, sought-after prophetic Bible teacher, challenging the body of Christ to committed discipleship and living an overcoming life in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. He has been married to Laureen for over 40 years; they have 6 adult children and 13 grandchildren.

Pastor's Surgery:  On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the pastor is available at the church to offer advice and counselling between 9 am - 3 pm.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building for our Sunday Service starting at 10am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the church service. It is a great way to meet people. All refreshments are free.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10am with a warm welcome from one of our team members. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our band. We typically have 2 or 3 songs lasting approximately 20 minutes. Sometimes a person might pray out loud or read a small passage from the bible. Sometimes people share things that they believe God is saying to the whole church family. This might seem strange the first time you hear it but it’s all part of our connecting with God. We then share news and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church. One of our leaders will then give a sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We then finish with a final worship song. Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.

What about my kids?

Sunday school runs on the 2nd & 4th Sundays from 10:40 am to 11:50 am. On the 5th Sunday, we host a special event for all the children.
All children, aged 3-11 will be in classes that are run in a Kidz Klub style.

Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service for the welcome, songs and notices. We really value worshipping God all together as a family. At some point before the sermon someone will announce that it’s time for the Sunday School classes.

The kids group activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, bible stories, testimonies, praying, music, craft, drama, fun games and free play.

Getting Connected

Small Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some afternoons and some evenings. Check out Small Groups and see if there’s one that you could join, or we can put you in touch with a small group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.
